Few lines from "Leisure" By William H Davies

What is this life,  if full of care
we have no time to stand and stare

No, time to stand beneath the trees
and stare for long at sheep and geese

No, time to feel the breeze that pass
and see the squirrels hide their nuts in grass

No, time to stand in broad daylight
and see the stars that shine at night

No, time to see the birds that sing
and see the temple bells that ring

A, poor life like this if full of care
we have no time to stand and stare.

It's time to act!

Firstly let’s just drain away all the notions and the perceptions we have in our mind for the common wealth games. From past one month a lot is being written by the print media regarding the CWG. A few days back Mr Azim Premji chairman of Wipro limited spoke in favour of the common wealth games in the national daily Times of India and in the very next Sunday edition Mr Chetan Bhagat (of Five point someone fame) simply condemned the games. Don’t you think that media is unnecessarily playing with the minds of the people. Some simply applaud the efforts taken by the government in this regard while others term it as s***. Indian land is home to immense talent whether it is in field of art, literature or sports. In many fields the Indians are taking the world by storm but in the sports we lack far behind. The players here aren't groomed well and hence they always end putting up a lack luster performance. The common wealth games will at least boost up the morale of players and will motivate the common person to take sports as a career option and excel in it.

I personally feel that bidding for common wealth games was a very praiseworthy endeavour taken by the Indian government and I’m sure that even you all will agree to it. We all have equally shared the burden of price hike of petrol, vegetables etc. and silently contributed to this endeavour of the government because in our hearts of heart we wanted CWG to be a success and enhance the pride of our nation. These games have the potential to boost the sports infrastructure and the Indian economy but if taken in a right way. Talking about our national capital Delhi a lot many development projects have been taken which are partly on their way of completion. We have new drinking water supply from Sonia-Vihar provided to Eastern part of city, new water sewage system put all over the city by the authorities. An entirely new network of roads, flyovers and metros is being built. Renewed focus is being paid on solid waste management by local authority through Bhagidari scheme. Airport beautification expansion is being done both for domestic and international terminals. Besides all this the travel industry will benefit the maximum from the influx of spectators and participants from different countries, for the Games. Government of India is planning to commence the 'Discover India in CWG 2010' program to cash in the 10 million tourists that are expected to step on India's turf, during the second most important sports event. According to ASSOCHAM (The Associated Chambers of commerce and Industry of India), India is going to get around USD 16,915 million in the year 2010, from tourism alone. Common Wealth Games 2010 will surely increase employment and bring in revenue to the Indian economy from all spheres, due to enhanced rate of tourist activity. The hotel industry, aviation industry, airport authorities, travel agents and tour operators will be benefited a lot besides the rail and metro corporations. No doubt the shabby and disguised slums can’t be hidden behind the shimmering and glamorous constructions which are in progress at the moment but then at least these games will benefit a certain section of society which will surely contribute to the developing Indian economy and as the saying goes something is better than nothing. It is only once the Games get over that the real long term benefits to the Indian economy are going to come into effect. If Delhi can pull off a good show during the Games, Delhi and India may find itself soon becoming a tourist hot spot. The average number of foreign tourists coming to India will also rise by an estimated 5 – 10%. Unfortunately people who had been assigned the responsibility of the CWG are filling their own pockets in the bargain and taking the Indian mass for a ride. This shows that how dominant corruption is in the Indian scenario. It’s because of the ill works of these people, the common wealth games are being portrayed in a bad light. No doubt all of us have contributed a lot to the games so how can we let our country down. It has been a shame for all of us that the honour of our country has been so badly degraded in front of the whole world, so rather than creating more embarrassment it becomes our moral duty to redeem the lost honour by conducting the games successfully. Rather than criticizing it’s time to gear up and look at the brighter side. Being a nation with sound law system and a vibrant media the culprits who mismanaged the funds will surely be unmasked and taken to task. It is a fact that seeing the present conditions India isn't well equipped to host the CWG 2010 but then we can’t now simply run away from the responsibilities It’s time to realise that rather than condemning or shunning away from games we need to give our support to the games as the due date for the games is coming nearer. It is the time that we try to wrap the things temporarily and stop giving a negative publicity to the games. We should take the games as an opportunity to prove our mettle to the onlookers. All the negative things shouldn't put the enthusiasm and the fever of CWG down.
